Buju Banton Seeks Freedom Through New Trial
Print

In a motion filed Monday, lawyers for imprisoned reggae star Buju Banton requested a new trial for the star. The new trial request may be Banton’s last best hope for Freedom.

Last month, Banton’s request for an appeal on his conviction on his 2011 conviction on cocaine conspiracy and trafficking charges was denied three-judge panel in Atlanta. Banton is currently serving 10 years in federal prison.

On Monday, Banton’s attorney, David O. Markus, filed a motion in Tampa federal court for a new trial on all the charges.

The U.S. government filed on Tuesday a motion to strike down Banton’s request for another trial. Banton’s initial jury trial in 2010 ended in a mistrial when the jury deadlocked.
