Portia Simpson Miller's Message for Jamaican Independence
Print

By: Patricia Trutescu

Earlier today, in honor of the day that Jamaica gained independence from Britain 50 years ago, the honorable Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller sends a message of empowerment and pride to Jamaicans at home and in the diaspora. She says:

"Today we mark a momentous mileston in the history of Jamaica, land we love. Fifty years ago we embarked on a mission to exchange our status as a colony for that of independent nation. We have received congratulations and good wishes on this anniversary from all across the globe."

Part of this message is relevant to the significant progress Jamaica has experienced like: having one of the most stable democracies in the world; improving infrastructures like airports, seaports, telecommunications, and our highways; expanding healthcare delivery and education; charting an independent foreign policy; and more.

In addition, the island nation's Prime Minister also recited quotes from political and artistic figureheads including Martin Luther King Jr.; Bob Marley; Norman Washington Manley; and Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret.
